Proprioceptive System

Receptors are located in muscles, joints and tendons, and are stimulated by compression or stretch. It allows us to identify our body position in relation to objects and others.

Proprioception is the unconscious awareness of body position. This sense interprets the position of our body parts, their relationship to each other, and their relationship to other people and objects. This sensory system affects body awareness, motor planning, bilateral coordination, and the grading of force. Proprioception can have a calming/organizing effect on the nervous system when providing deep pressure and/or heavy work.
